. this was a long time coming. the last time the oakland police department actually had a class of new officers go through the academy, graduate, get their badge and hit the streets, that was in 2008, while oakland's crime problem keeps going up. today 38 new police officers got their badges here in oakland pinned for the first time by chief howard jordan. the numbers are sobering. right now oakland has 611 officers on the street. so this brings that number to 649. police chief howard jordan has said he'd like to have 1,000 officers helping to bring crime down. these new officers have been in the academy for about six months and will eventually be part of a new crime fighting strategy. chief jordan announced, of neighborhood policing. one of the biggest complaints is calling in a crime and not getting the reaction they hoped for. he said the new officers will help that and boost moral. >> we're not out there alone and city made a long-term commitment to staffing the department. it will help the citizens of oakland, one of the complaints we generally get is the response time, how long it takes for

are starting out with a few clouds around, and that is keeping the temperatures up in san francisco and oakland, and 51 in oakland, and 48 in san carlos and 47 in san jose. it was really cold yesterday morning and we were so warm in the afternoon. today, changes come in with cooler afternoon highs, and a few more clouds in the sea breezes, well, the sea breeze should pick up by the afternoon, a lot like yesterday. so, with a little bit of fog this morning, we are looking at some of the visibility reduced in napa and santa rosa, and talking about partly cloudy and cooler this afternoon, with a better chance of rain toward the end of the week. santa rosa is quarter-mile visibility, and four miles in napa and the rest of the bay is fine but we are warming this morning than yesterday. in fact, we are six degrees warmer in oakland and two degrees warmer in san jose. high pressure is still holding on but it is eventually sliding to the east. as it does, by the middle of the week, we will go out for a southern flow and a couple of weak systems to the north to get awfully close to the bay. the rest of

in the deaths of the man from oakland and two other people on the las vegas strip is now in jail. a team of l.a. police officers and federal agents arrested 26-year-old ammar harris yesterday at an apartment in north hollywood after a week-long manhunt. >> we used beneficial tips. >> the shooting victim kenneth cherry was buried yesterday in oakland. harris and cherry had argued at the valet stand at the aria hotel in las vegas. investigators say the shooting that followed caused a chain reaction crash on the strip that killed a taxi driver and a passenger. >>> how long was a partial human skull lying along the alameda creek trail in union city? authorities say it may have been more than a year. a forensics team combed the creekbed yesterday looking for any other remains, this after some teenagers found the skull on wednesday. investigators say the teeth showed some signs of dental work. that means it's highly unlikely that the skull fragment was from an old native american burial ground. >>> uc-santa cruz police say a reported rape on campus was a hoax.

. oakland's new police consultant. william bratton. outlined his plans for turning around the troubled department. he is a former police chief in los angeles. and he advocates some controversial policing methods. such as "stop and frisk" which his critics do not support. nonetheless, bratton says. he is the right person to fix oakland's crime problem. >> in the 20 years i served as chief of police. this is a fresh set of eyes looking into these problems. hopefully i will come off with some solutions. >> pam: new tonight at 8. kron 4's terisa estacio is live at a community meeting. where some residents are upset about bratton's proposed tactics. terisa? >> the meeting is going on that at oakland city hall as they are learning about bratton. they packed about hearing about the various components to reduce violent crime. community policing is the major parts. the major department will be restructured to set up with local police to apartments to do with murders. he says that crime is so bad that he fears for the safety of his and others'. that is what brought him to the meeting tonight. >>

the north and at 13 miles per hour in napa and 12 miles per hour in oakland and the coast is faster at 8 miles per hour. looking on downtown san francisco, all the way over toward berkeley, graduations cal on the win, san francisco was warmer at 60 and oakland and san jose are at 58 and 59, and walnut creek is 63 and palo alto 59 and mill valley at 61. ocean beach as we look from mount tamalpais this morning, it looks inviting but the air temperature is warmer than the water with 58 in santa rosa and we have that in hayward and we have 60 in fairfield, and 61 in los gatos and livermore and napa, a warmer spot at 62 degrees. here are the three things to know about the forecast: it will be bright and breezy and mild if not warm this weekend and a chance of rain comes back to the forecast on wednesday and thursday so another great weekend to work outside in the yard and maybe wash the car and have the kids do it for you. you can see alcatraz, the golden gate bridge, you can get beautiful shots of the bay area. compared to yesterday, four to eight degrees warmer than it was. why is that happ
